Chrome Rims – Tips for a Super Shine
For many car enthusiasts, chrome rims are the ultimate finishing touch, making your sweet ride that much sweeter. While it seems that everybody throws on a pair of shining new rims – what with MTV’s Pimp My Ride and other trendy car shows popping up on almost every network – these aren’t just some flash in the pan fad. Great rims are stylish and timeless and can truly make almost any type of car stand out even more. But now that you have your rims, or you’re planning on getting them, how in the world are you supposed to clean them?
When you invest in something like a great set of chrome rims, you have to take care of them properly. As mentioned, these are an investment and a finishing touch that should take your car’s style, look and feel to the next level. Tarnished, dirty or otherwise tainted rims can have the completely opposite effect.
The first step in taking care of your rims and leaving them with a super shine every time is to keep up the maintenance of the rims on a regular basis. Consistent car washing, while paying extra attention to the rims themselves is required. One effective method of cleaning your rims to maintain their shine is by mixing some warm water with some mild laundry detergent.
For tougher grime and dull spots though, it takes more than a little laundry detergent. There are many different types of polishes and cleansers, and not all of them will be right for your rims. The key thing is to make sure you know that you have authentic chrome rims. You may have chrome coated rims or polished aluminum rims or some other not-so-authentic rim, which could explain some of the dullness to begin with. Outside of that, there are also different qualities of chrome and chrome finishes that your rims may have.
Depending on the quality level of the chrome rims (assuming you are now 100% sure they are chrome) you can pick out different polishes to fit the job. With high quality chrome you can rest easy using almost any chrome-specific polish on the market. Simply apply with some elbow grease, or you can even buy small buffers that can attach to drills to make the job a bit easier. If you want to play it safe, make sure to look for a type of chrome polish that’s a bit on the mellow side, to ensure you won’t do any harm.
The most important thing is to make sure you use chrome polish, not any other type of polish. Also, never use any harsh scrubbers such as a Brillo pad, which can scratch and damage your beautiful, shining chrome rims. Use soft rags or buffers, chrome specific polish over the long haul, and regularly wash your rims on a week to week basis, and your rims will always look as good as new.
